Marisa Land Legacy may not beat its predecessor New Super Marisa Land in scope, but it's still the kind of game to make you smile on a bad day. The music is uplifting and cheerful, the graphics colourful, the artwork adorable. There are many secrets to be found (5 hidden stars per stage and a few warpzones) and even a special unlockable to make the game more challenging for another playthrough. I bet the couch-co-op is amazing, but it'd take a lot of moving of hardware to get it set up, let alone the effort of fetching someone to reluctantly play some weird japanese game with me that they have never heard of.

This game is seriously awesome! It's similar to SMB1, but with some element differences. The main one being that Marisa gradually grows. Rather than just having a big and small form, Marisa grows another head tall depending on how many mushrooms she has. At four heads, she gets a projectile move, and at 8 heads, she is temporarily large enough to charge through everything, similar to the mega mushroom from the Mario series. I really love the art style of this game. The pixel art is extremely vibrant, cute, and detailed. The music is fun, upbeat, and matches the mood of every level! This sort of variety in game styles is really why I started to like Touhou. Marisaland Legacy is a fun, unique, and cute take on an age-old classic like SMB1. I would recommend it to anyone!
It's basically Super Mario Bros, which is what I expected going into it having played New Super Marisa Land like 8 years ago. Unfortunately none of the niceties from that game are present in Legacy. No map, just 32 levels in a row SMB-style. You can count the different enemy types on one hand so by world 6 or so, it becomes a battle of attrition. You can't save and a game over ends your run, but lives are plentiful enough that the only thing stopping you from beating the game is your own will power. You do eventually unlock a stage select that lets you pick which X-1 to start from. Marisa herself is very sluggish with poor handling and awful midair control. It's an ok game on its own but a HUGE step down from New Super Marisa Land. The main game is about an hour from start to finish (then there's a second harder set of levels after that). It's hard to justify the $20 price tag.
First thing's first, have you played Super Marisa Land? Have you played New Super Marisa Land? This one fits squarely between these two entries in terms of quality, better than Super Marisa Land but nowhere near the scope and quality of New Super Marisa Land. There aren't any powerups like in NSML, there isn't a world map, there aren't as many levels, and every single boss in this game is the exact same boss with different hazards depending on the world. In terms of remaking Super Marisa Land, it does it but may as well be a completely different game. Legacy shares the same 'Head Proportion' mechanic where depending on how many mushrooms (and the type of mushroom you grab) you pick up, you change sizes. Head proportion 2 is basic mini Marisa, 3 is basically young Marisa, 4 is just below regular Marisa and 6 is older Marisa, with the ability to shoot projectiles. 8 is a temporary 'Mega Marisa' powerup that kills anything it touches, similar to the one in New Super Marisa Land except M...
I don't understand how this have positive reviews on Steam. Paid users by developer? I wanted Mario type clone, but this is just disappointing game. Lacking of content. In normal mode, completed about 6 worlds on this game under a hour. Game have 8 worlds in total. 4 short levels on each world. False advertisement about local multiplayer. There is none of local multiplayer. Annoyingly slowly getting speed with sprinting button. No powerups other than getting her bigger and "invincibility" at random places. Boss rooms are too easy, no boss variation, only same ball enemy at each world ending. Not even used any Touhou characters. You only use "koopa trooper" type enemy to kill them. This game should cost 5€ mostly. 14,99€ is too steep for fan game quality like this. Get official Touhou game with 14,99€ instead https://store.steampowered.com/app/745880/__Hidden_Star_in_Four_Seasons/
I've play this game a lot with some friends, very recommend.
Marisa grabs a shroom and goes on a trip.
Really fun ~ if you like platform games, and it's more fun with your friends in local play !
I love this platformer. I hope more people speedrun it. I need more people to compete with. https://www.speedrun.com/MarisaLand_Legacy#Warpless
Basically Super Mario Bros (+Lost Levels) minus Mario, plus Marisa and Yoshi Coins. Or Rainbow Stars, as they are in this game. It's good, but the jumping mechanics take getting used to. 10/10 would eight head proportion again
